The Horwasps arrived in the Echo Cluster years ago, yet no proper guides about fighting against them were available — until now. The outcome is clear in games: Either the players fear the Horwasp too much and let them grow too strong, or they charge toward them recklessly, losing ships in vain.
A new threat is moving in against the Eleven Races of the Echo Cluster. The Senate has authorized the following program to help educate prospective commanders, in order to better prepare our collective defense against the invaders.
In coordination with the War Office of the Galactic Senate, and under the auspices of the Grand Vizier, we here at the Planets Magazine are excited to present a new series of instructional articles for the Eleven Races. When the revised queue system was first released as an alternative to the Classic ship build process, it met with some opposition. Today, it is being systematically replaced by the new Planetary Production Queue with its random build options.
And yet, at least in my opinion, the original objections have yet to receive even a satisfactory hearing, and they certainly haven’t been addressed. Sure, anyone who objects to the new system can go back to play Classic if they want — but that’s no answer; some of the advances since 1991 haven’t been all bad. And it’s no use saying you can pick and choose in Custom games unless you and ten of your closest friends all agree on exactly which new options you like.
So let’s take a moment and review one example: the Hull Penalty.
I bet she had a pretty smile, but if so she was saving it for someone special and I didn’t qualify. I had places to be, but good God did I need a nap. Ah, well; no rest for the wicked, and the good don’t need any. I also dropped off a check for my rent in advance, because you never can tell.
My next stop was the local precinct. It doesn’t do to skip out on a guy like Carmody. Besides, I wanted to see the effect my uniform would have on him. From a perverse sense of cruelty, I stopped at the desk sergeant to ask after the condition of Cadet Greene’s uniform; he grinned evilly and said he’d look it over personally when the Cadet came in. The key to proper success in life is all about paying attention to the little details.

I knew that accent from my Militia days — a Confederate! This was about to get political — and no place for the likes of me. Carmody was still distracted with his capture; trouble getting the cuffs on, looked like. I’d done my bit for Service and State, and didn’t stick around to watch.
